In a new collaboration, China’s leading independent museum of contemporary art, UCCA, and premium men’s shirt specialist PYE come together to highlight five emerging artistic talents in China: Chen Tianzhuo, Guan Xiao, Huang Ran, Liao Guohe and Qiu Xiaofei.
Since its founding in 2007, UCCA has aimed to promote contemporary creativity in China, with a consistent focus on some of the youngest, freshest artistic voices there. In 2013 the landmark exhibition “ON | OFF: China’s Young Artists in Concept and Practice” outlined a new generation of artists who are increasingly global in their outlook and language.
PYE and UCCA have a history of profound collaboration. In 2013, PYE was the Lead Sponsor of UCCA’s Annual Gala, supporting not simply UCCA but also the development of contemporary Chinese art. In 2014, their partnership was furthered through a joint-effort exhibition of video works entitled “Woven Stories, Woven Expressions.”
This collaboration gives new and wearable form to their collaboration. Five young artists with markedly different styles and concepts have contributed distinct works resulting in unique designs. Some are extensions of the original artworks, while others have been created exclusively for this occasion. Their variety is a testament to the features heralded by art and fashion – individuality and freedom. Produced in limited edition, this series of shirts reflects the passion and respect both PYE and UCCA carry toward contemporary art. Art is not only for viewing. It can be worn and felt. It is a quality of life worth pursuing.
